Executive Briefing
Bangladeshi actress Pori Moni has been granted bail after surrendering to a Dhaka court in connection with an assault and vandalism case filed by businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud. A judicial magistrate approved her bail on a 500 Taka bond on Thursday following a brief hearing.
Dhallywood actress Pori Moni secured bail on Thursday after turning herself in to the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Following the hearing, Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman granted her bail on a 500 Taka bond, resolving the arrest warrant issued against her the previous day.
The warrant was issued on Wednesday when the actress failed to appear in court for a scheduled testimony hearing. Her lawyer, Nilanjana Rifat, informed the court that Pori Moni was suffering from severe allergies and requested a time extension. However, the court rejected the plea, cancelled her existing bail, and ordered her arrest.
On Thursday morning, Pori Moni arrived at the court premises in a white private car, escorted by approximately 10 private security guards dressed in black. The security team cordoned off the area around her vehicle, managing the crowd of onlookers, lawyers, and journalists that had gathered upon hearing news of her arrival.
The case traces back to an incident on the night of June 9, 2021, at the Boat Club in Savar. Businessman and former club president Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed the lawsuit on July 6 of that year, accusing Pori Moni and her associates of verbal abuse, physical assault, and vandalism. Mahmud alleged that the actress demanded a free bottle of alcohol and, upon being refused, threw a serving glass and a mobile phone at him, injuring his head and chest.
Following a lengthy investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted its report in 2024. The investigating officer confirmed the validity of the charges against Pori Moni and her costume designer, Junaid Bogdadi Jimmy. A third accused, Fatema Tuz Jannat Boni, was cleared of the charges in the report.
