Executive Briefing
An eighteen-month international joint operation led by Europol and German federal authorities has effectively neutralized one of the most prolific banking trojan networks in modern history.
MUNICH — In a sweeping victory for global cybersecurity enforcement, Europol, the FBI, and the Bavarian State Criminal Police completed a synchronized international takedown of the cybercriminal syndicate known as 'BlackLotus' early Monday morning.
Operating across hidden bulletproof hosting nodes in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, the cartel had compromised over 600 financial institutions worldwide through spear-phishing campaigns and zero-day kernel exploits, extorting an estimated $210 million since 2023.
"The dismantling of BlackLotus proves that sovereign borders offer no sanctuary to threat actors targeting civil digital infrastructure," announced Bavarian Chief Prosecutor Klaus Richter during a press briefing in Munich.
Authorities seized 43 active command-and-control servers, took custody of twelve key developers and operators, and froze cold cryptocurrency wallets holding over $78 million in bitcoin and privacy coins.
